CYSTIC NODULES
QUESTION Hi i got your email address from thyroidmanager.org,i hope you don't mind me emailing you a question? I had a ultrasound scan a few weeks ago and got a copy of the results sent to me(well the covering letter) that says the following:
“There were changes of multiple cystic nodular areas involving the istmus. The thyroid gland was enlarged.”
Could you possibly explain what this might mean? I was told at my last out-patients appointment that i might need surgery?
RESPONSE The scan suggests that you have developed cysts in the thyroid, probably over quite a long time. This has caused the overall size of the gland to increase. Usually these cysts are benign ie not cancerous. However it may be suggested that, just to be sure, removal of the thyroid should be done. Also a fine needle biopsy may also be suggested
